We've already had three years of this. The way we're going, there's no F in Christmas. While we watch multiple new viral variants surge back and forth across the globe, it must seem like pandemics go on forever. Fortunately, both SARS and MERS were contained and eliminated fairly quickly, but we don't have that much other experience with lethal pandemic coronaviruses. It is suspected that the 1890s pandemic that featured in the famous legal case Carlill v Carbolic Smoke Ball Co may have been the coronavirus OC43, but novel at the time, it was lethal and regarded as influenza. It is now one of our common cold viruses. Similarly, what was called Sweating Sickness during the reign of Henry the VIII, may also have been a novel coronavirus. We don't need to be overly concerned about catching this virus as it only affects the old and immunocompromised. Wrong. While the majority of people seem to be either asymptomatic or to quickly recover from acute COVID-19, there is concern about what is referred to as long COVID or post-COVID syndrome. The available evidence seems to indicate that prior vaccination, while limiting serious disease, does not prevent these often-serious complications. There is also evidence that repeated infection increased the overall risk, in some instances doubling with the second infection and tripling with the third. The price of freedom must surely be infinite as many people in western society are prepared to sacrifice everything to obtain it. The price of freedom certainly wasn't free and there are lots of highly emotive arguments relating to this supposedly once in a century pandemic. I am sure that we have all experienced many of them: You're antisocial and why won't you shake hands or give people a hug these days? You should think about family, Jesus and the Sea of Galilee: He was never worried about lepers. Why are you so concerned about catching a simple virus and aren't you vaccinated and therefor protected? You'll end up with no friends at all and you're just scared. The variations of Ad Hominem attack were endless. Hey ABC, what's the big idea of censoring this week's COVID-19 data? Are you guys in bed with Alan Joyce and the tourist industry? I would have hoped for so much better. Here is the missing data that was taken down from your ABC Coronavirus News site on Saturday 31/12/2022. My main concern is that many of us waited to read the ABC reported COVID statistics on Friday only to find out that Queensland and a few other states were no longer reporting their data. Of even greater concern was the fact that the ABC replaced the COVID statistics page of 30/12/2022 with the one from the previous week on Saturday to hide what some of the states were doing. What has most surprised me is the way that the ABC has been complicit in playing down the current spike. I have officially complained to the ABC and was about to complain to the Australian Communications and Media Authority or DIGI. The world seems so divided these days, are you with us or against us? That is the question. With all that is happening, it is very common for people to perceive the world in this way, but we must always be careful to respect each other's different opinions and decisions. As the old saying goes, "one's food is another's poison". It's important to remember that about half of the human population are asymptomatic when infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If you appear to not have caught this virus despite being quite socially promiscuous (mixing), you might say "Oh, that's great, I probably won't be affected at all". That might well be true, but your vulnerable close contacts will certainly be running quite a risk and may wish to continue social distancing until there are better vaccines, antivirals and the long-term effects of infection are much better understood.画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。
